Look in carbureted vehicles, a slight smell is normal, already when the spark is short, but being with a mechanical pump is secrer delivering fuel until the engine stops, the other failure you can have is that the carburetor tank is discharged due to problems of the float or needle, I think I.

I share the same opinion with the two previous friends but you should check the vent of the fuel pond since, like these carbureted and mechanical pump models, in some cases the pressure within the tank makes the benzine continue to flow through the circuit until entering the carburetor, but anyway all the data is valid tests with all this greetings.

Manual-Mecanica Response on the Renault 11 Mechanical Consultation
Hi Vicadri,
in addition to the previous tips, in that system the carburetor float acts a needle valve that is the one that opens or closes the fuel passage according to the position of the float, sometimes it is locked in the place where the seat is housed or is damaged and does not regulate the step. Verify that. Luck.
Miguel
