Volvo Trucks has developed a new GSM -based system that makes the workshop remotely check the status of the truck and can read the diagnostic codes, which translates into more activity time and less maintenance costs. This system will be launched in Europe in 2013.

The new system allows workshop maintenance technicians to check the mileage of the truck and the speed with which the different components have been worn. Then, the workshop can plan the maintenance according to real needs each vehicle.

"This increases the activity time and the risk of unforeseen stops in the Arcenes is minimized. Security is reinforced and the administrative procedures of transport companies are reduced, while their customers can have great reliability," says Christian Gustavsson.

Activity time and maintenance optimized
remote communication between the truck and the workshop is complementary to the maintenance plan. These have a service plan that is standard, however each driver circulates in a certain way, and it affects the way the pieces are wearing, and therefore the maintenance times. Times that can be lengthened or reduced. Therefore, if the workshop receives the data on the frequency of real wear, it is able to adjust the maintenance intervals.

"Many of the parameters are difficult to calculate. In a truck that is conducted in worse conditions that the average, certain components are wearing faster, while a truck used in optimal conditions, those same components will have more useful life and their replacement will be delayed," says Christian Gustavsson.

Minimize unforeseen stops
if the truck is used differently from that planned in the initial maintenance plan, the workshop receives information about it. "For example, the workshop can receive an alert about the wear of brake pads. As a result, worn parts are replaced in a timely manner and do not fail in the middle of a long distance trip," says Christian Gustavsson. "This benefits everyone. Being able to avoid unforeseen visits to the workshop is much more effective for the transport company and for the workshop."

Downloads through GSM
Initially the system will include a limited number of parameters, but within a few years, Volvo Trucks will develop more performance to improve activity time and reduce operating costs for transport companies.
