As expected with the one who is falling, vehicle sales in Spain have collapsed loudly. Touring and SUVs registrations have fallen by 69.3% despite the fact that the alarm state was decreed on March 14.

The registrations of cars and SUVs in Spain reached a volume of 37,644 units during the month of March, which represents a collapse of 69.3% in the comparison with the 122,659 units delivered in that month of the previous year, according to data from the manufacturers associations (ANFAC), concessionaires (faconuto) and vendors (Ganvam).

The strong drop experienced in March in car sales is explained by the expansion of the coronavirus and the measures taken by the Government, among which the limitation of mobility of the population, which motivated the closure of the dealers and the practice paralysis of the car market.

The fact, in addition, occurs with half a month of confinement (March 14), so that most sales will have concentrated in the first days of the month when the alarm state had not yet been decreed.

Fall without parallel

Given these data, the director of Communication at Anfac, Noemi Navas, said that March sales figures do not have "paragon" and pointed out that in Anfac they consider that it is possible to return quickly to the situation before this crisis. "We will need a" shock plan "of relaunching the sector that collects specific measures for automotive and serves to quickly recover the market and production," he said.

For his part, the Director of Communication of Faconauto, Raúl Morales, described as "historical collapse" the commercial registration counted last month, and foresees, with the closed dealers, a "non -existent market or with falls close to 90%" the next two months.

From Ganvam, the director of Communication, Tania Puche, explained that the break of the activity by the Coronavirus has made that during the state of alarm the daily registrations are located in just 300 units a day. "Taking into account that distribution networks operate with margins below 1% on billing, this situation logically supposes the year for lost, with the consequences that this will have on employment," he said.

To all this, we must add the numbers ERTE within the automotive sector. After all manufacturers with production in Spain have presented their regulation files, the rest of the automotive sector-one of the most punished by the Covid-19 crisis-has done the same. So much so that Faconauto estimates that the impact on dealers will involve the temporary employment suspension for 150,000 people.
