Because of the symptoms you describe, or as you say, it is air intake (although it should not make black smoke), or it is possible that the engine temperature sensor is not very fine, and do not send the signal well to the motor UCE, and lack gasoil pressure even to keep the idle.
Anyway, if you can refund it with a diagnostic machine, possibly some temperature parameter (water or diesel) is possibly out of tolerance.
