Coloring collisions occupy a high percentage of traffic accidents. To prevent this problem, Volvo Trucks has developed a braking system that includes the collision notice, available in the new Volvo FH range. This system helps the driver to prevent much of these collisions per reach.

This new system combines a radar with a camera that works in unison to identify and monitor vehicles in front of the truck. The system is designed to identify both stopped vehicles and moving vehicles. Collisions with moving objects with relative speeds of up to 70 km/h can also be prevented. When the system detects a vehicle with which the truck can collide, a red light is activated on the windshield to attract driver's attention and to pay attention to the road again.

"We do not want to assume the functions of the driver, because we know that it is he who is in the best position to respond and that he is able to drive safely," says Almqvist.

However, if the truck does not detect a reaction from the driver, such as a flyer's turn or stepping on the brake, the system will launch a flash of light and a beep. If despite everything there was no reaction, the vehicle will stop slightly, and finally, if all of the above does not work, the emergency braking will be activated and everything possible to stop the truck will be done.

"In the vast majority of cases, the first alert signal will be enough to get the driver's attention. And in the exceptional case that it is not so, the system will prevent serious accidents," continues Carl Johan Almqvist.

In Europe, emergency braking systems will be mandatory for new trucks from November 2015.
