Infiniti, the Nissan Premium car brand, has confirmed that it will manufacture vehicles in Europe, specifically at the Nissan production plant in Sunderland, the United Kingdom.
The announcement represents a substantial investment of 250 million pounds in its facilities, and the creation of some 1,000 jobs in Sunderland and the United Kingdom is expected.
The new Infiniti, which will be exported to the whole world, is developing with the collaboration of the London Design Center and the European Technical Center. This agreement will mean the creation of 1,000 new jobs, the training of apprentices and the strengthening of the economy.
The Secretary of Business in Sunderland, Vince Cable, has declared that Sunderland will be the only place in the world in which this new premium compact car will be manufactured.
Infiniti's new compact premium will begin to produce from 2015, and will allow the company to compete in the core of the Premium segment for the first time. In addition with the 60,000 annual production units of Infiniti, Nissan will mark a milestone in the volume of car manufacturing in the United Kingdom, in the last 23 years, with a total of more than half a million cars built on the Sunderland plant.
In this plant, during 2012, the figure of 6,000 workers was exceeded for the first time, and global exports from the plant have already exceeded five million units.
Due to the Sinderland capacity limitations, the confirmation of the new Infiniti will mean that the future Hatchback type model of segment C previously assigned for the plant in April will be manufactured elsewhere. The place of this vehicle will be decided and announced on a later date.
